We're having to wait for a bit more snow before one of the premier sporting events in the world comes to town. Now scheduled for February 14, 14 & 16, the 85th Annual Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby pits mushers from around the globe against each other in various classes of thrilling competition that will take teams around Laconia and out across frozen forests and fields of the Lakes Region.
Managed by the Lakes Region Sled Dog Club, this timeless contest is an amazing piece of winter culture, seemingly straight out of a Jack London novel. The sleds are surprizingly fast, the drivers are world class, and the sled dogs are amazing. These animal athletes are the finest, best cared for animals you will ever see and to see the joy in the faces of these four legged athletes as they fly by is a treat! Grab your snowshoes or cross country skis and get out along Parade Road, Route 106 for some long views of the mushers and their teams – and bring your camera!
By the way, on the 14th, 15th & 16th, comprehensive race coverage can be heard on sister station, 1490 WEMJ-AM
For a wonderful, quick read: check out Gary Paulsen's Winterdance A funny, touching, fascinating account of the trials and tribulations of learning this ancient sport... and Paulsen's running of the Iditarod. It's one of my favorite books.
